Attached to the very lowest part of an interior wall, a skirting board masks the join between the wall and floor. As well as protecting against knocks and abrasion from feet and furniture, skirting boards decorative mouldings that add definition to a room, giving it a 'finished' look. Skirting boards are sometimes referred to as 'baseboards' particularly in American English.
Also known as 'chair rails', dado rails are fixed to the walls around the perimeter of a room, usually somewhere between a third and halfway up the wall's height. Though mainly an aesthetic feature, dado rails also offer the wall a certain amount of protection from being knocked and possibly damaged by furniture. A popular way to decorate a room is with two different colours or styles of wallpaper, one on either side of the dado rail. The rail itself can easily be painted or varnished to complement or contrast with any interior decor scheme.
These mouldings are used to frame a door or window, giving it a mush more pleasing visual aesthetic. A horizontal head casing extends across the top surfaces of vertical side casings: where these elements join, they form what is known as a 'butt joint' (as opposed to a 'mitre joint'.
