The Value of Timber Decking
With the arrival of spring (finally!), it's the ideal time to get outdoors and start preparing gardens for the upcoming summer. Timber decking is the perfect project, adding plenty of value to a home in both practical, aesthetic and financial terms. This edition of the JAS Timber blog explores the many benefits of installing garden decking.
To begin with, there is the unmatched practical value of a decking structure. It immediately creates a new, infinitely-usable area for enjoying the outdoors in the privacy of your own garden, whether its with your family, friends or even on your own. The decking allows you to make full use of space that would otherwise be essentially wasted.
As an organic material, timber is absolutely perfect for upping the aesthetic value of both your home and its garden. The rich, natural appearance is absolutely stunning and the clean geometric lines of timber decking are extremely pleasing to the eye, helping to delineate the structure of a property. Kerb appeal skyrockets!
A number of studies have shown that installing timber decking can dramatically increase the financial value of a property. Property Price Advice, an independent service, carried out a study that showed property values increase by at least 10% after a timber decking structure was installed. The same study also found that a minimum of 70% of the cost of decking materials is recouped due to the increase in property value.
Post Office Money carried out a similar study, the results of which suggested that installing decking delivers the largest increase in property value with the lowest initial financial outlay, as compared to other projects designed to improve the home such as adding an extension or a conservatory. This study showed that installing timber decking could provide up to a 77% on the initial cost of the project.
