This nominal 300x50mm regularised timber is a very high quality German softwood, air-dried and wet-graded to SSC16 or SSC24 certification, so suitable as joists, rafters and building timber, and is generally Grade-Stamped for inspection by your Building Inspector. Normal lengths of 2x12 joists are 4.8 and 6.0 metres;
Unseasoned 50mm timber can have a moisture content approaching the maximum saturation level of 27%, when air-dried "in-stick" this can fall to 20-23%; Generally in a heated building, the moisture level can be 8-10%, and it is here, when the moisture level of timber is rapidly changed, that twisting, warping and splitting can occur. Less movement occurs if the building is unheated and the timber dries slowly.
Timber should be treated and fixed in place as soon as possible to help minimise any movement/twisting and surface checking/splitting that occurs naturally with changes in moisture content.
We can order in Kiln-dried 12x2 timber if required, but there is a time factor to get this from Germany - If kiln-dried the moisture level is brought down to 18-20%.
12x2 Timber is a natural product - variations in knots, colour, and grain should be expected - they are not defects.
A certain amount of checking and splitting is allowable in the Grading Specification, but this will not affect the strength as a joist, and each piece is Grade-Stamped for your reassurance.
( Also available as a special item - 7.2 metre lengths @ £7.05 per metre +vat; )
We can also source larger sizes and lengths to order - poa;
We keep tilt-fillet in stock and can cut firring pieces and other timber sections to size for flat-roof or pitch-roofing work.

12x2 Planed Timber should be treated and fixed in place as soon as possible to help minimise any movement/twisting and surface checking/splitting that occurs naturally with changes in moisture content;

Sizes are the usual timber nominal size that the 12x2 Building Timber is machined from, with a finished size that is generally obtained;
12x2 Carcassing sizes are generally ± 2mm on thickness / ± 2mm on width with one splitter saw edge and ± 10mm cross-cutting tolerance;
( Be aware: For many reasons, size, profile or other aspects of 12x2 timber may vary from batch to batch, so it is best to purchase all you need for a job in one go, rather than buying more at a later date.
If any graded timber is cut, then this may affect the timber-joist grade rating, and may cut off the timber grade-stamp;
If Size, Pattern or Grading of the Timber Joist is important, then you need to check this with your Building Inspector before ordering the timber with us, and before commencing work. We cannot be held responsible for any variations in Carcassing Timber sizes, pattern or grading.
